Why do we treat wastewater?

  • —Protection of the natural environment
  • Removal of toxic and hazardous materials that might accumulate
  • —Protection of water sources and downstream water supplies
  • —Elimination of deposits of solids in lakes, streams, and rivers 
  • —Conservation of water for reuse

Amarillo Wastewater Plants utilize dissolved oxygen, bacteria, and single-celled organisms for:

  • 99% removal of contaminants such as suspended solids and ammonia
  • 99% removal of Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD)
  • 98% removal of e-coli bacteria

The Wastewater Treatment Division is IMG_20171101_124033728_HDRresponsible for:

  • Treating and disposing the wastewater delivered from the wastewater collection system.

The Wastewater Treatment Division is subdivided into two facilities: —River Road Water Reclamation Facility and Hollywood Road Water Reclamation Facility.

River Road Water Reclamation Facility:

This division is responsible for the proper operation and maintenance of the wastewater treatment plant, located north of the City, to stay in compliance with State and Federal regulations.  The plant has a total treatment capacity of 16 million gallons per day. Treated effluent, approximately 8.7 million gallons per day, is available to Xcel Energy Company for industrial use, and the remaining treated wastewater is discharged to East Amarillo Creek.  Twenty-five full-time and two part-time employees operate and maintain the plant.

Hollywood Road Wastewater Plant:

This division is responsible for the proper operation and maintenance of the wastewater treatment plant, located south of the City, to stay in compliance with State and Federal regulations.  The plant has a total treatment capacity of 12 million gallons per day.  Treated effluent, approximately 6.8 million gallons per day, is available to Xcel Energy Company for industrial use, and the remaining treated wastewater is discharged to Lake Tanglewood and the Prairie Dog Town Fork of the Red River.  Twenty-five full-time and two part-time employees operate and maintain the plant.
