City of Amarillo, TX
Home MenuBuilding Safety's International Code Update Project: 2015 to 2021
The City of Amarillo is currently following the 2015 International Codes (I-Codes), 2012 Fire Code, and 2014 National Electric Code. As a result, the City of Amarillo is benefiting from having an excellent "Insurance Service Office" (ISO) rating which provides Amarillo citizens and businesses lower insurance costs. In order to maintain such an ISO rating, municipalities must adopt codes that are within two code cycles (codes are published every three years). Therefore, in order to maintain Amarillo's current ISO rating, updating our codes to comply with the "two code cycle" is necessary.

CAAC Public Engagement Meetings
Project Process
The City's Building Safety Department and the City Council appointed Construction Advisory and Appeals Commission will be the primary City entities involved in the code update. The CAAC is comprised of nine members who each represent various professional trades and occupations. Building Safety staff will discuss the updated codes and possible amendments with the CAAC and solicit input and their recommendations on the proposed codes and amendments.
The CAAC and Building Safety staff will meet to discuss code updates at regular intervals (weekly, bi-weekly, etc.) in a public meeting setting. Meetings will follow set agendas which are posted for public viewing a minimum of 72 hours before a given meeting. At each meeting, Building Safety staff will present to the CAAC the I-Codes and any recommended amendments to specific areas of the codes. The CAAC will then discuss and consider staff's recommendations.
After the 2021 I-Codes and amendments are presented to the CAAC, and they have finalized their recommendations, the 2021 I-Codes and proposed amendments will be presented to the City Council for final adoption. This presentation will occur at a regularly scheduled City Council meeting.
It is important to note that throughout this process, the CAAC and Building Safety staff encourage input from citizens and the development related community. All meetings described above will have an opportunity for the public to speak on any related agenda items. I-Code update related information will also be available via the City's website (Amarillo.gov), specifically, the Development Services and Building Safety web pages. There is a public feedback/comment option that is available through these web pages, as well.
