To enhance the learning experience for Black History Month, your 2nd graders are invited to experience original Nigerian drumming and African culture from the talents of AGALU. Based in Santa Fe, NM, AGALU, the Yoruba cultural Troupe of Nigeria is an ensemble of remarkable dancers, extraordinary drummers and textile artists from Oshogbo, Nigeria. With dazzling versalitity and vitality, they keep alive traditional Yoruba stories, rituals and mythology through exciting masquerades which include drumming, creation and transformation dances. The group is led by Akeem Ayanniyi, who is the 9th generation of his family to play the traditional Yoruba talking drum. Ayanniyi, from the Western Nigerian town of Erin Oshun near the historic art center of Oshogbo, has been performing since age five and has toured much of Africa as well as Germany, Brazil, Sweden and the United States as a performer. Students will experience an understanding of Black History Month, authentic cultural heritage from Nigeria, and enjoy the stories of drumming communication and dance riturals.
