MODERN PERSPECTIVES on the HOLOCAUST:

Ordinary People, Extraordinary Actions: The Rescue Mission of Mr. and Mrs. Kraus
Saturday, September 24, 2:30 PM  ̶  Amarillo Civic Center Heritage Room (doors open at 2:00 PM)

Steven Pressman, author of 50 Children: One Ordinary American Couple’s Extraordinary Rescue Mission into the Heart of Nazi Germany

In the spring of 1939, on the eve of the Holocaust, Gilbert and Eleanor Kraus set out from their home in Philadelphia and traveled to Vienna to carry out a risky and highly improbable mission — rescuing a group of Jewish children trapped inside Nazi Germany and bringing them to safety in the United States.
The story of the Krauses overlaps in numerous ways with the broader themes addressed in the Americans and the Holocaust exhibition. Not only did the couple face the dangers of carrying out their mission in Nazi Germany, but they also had to overcome enormous obstacles in the United States in order to bring the children to America. This Americans and the Holocaust related program is made possible, in part, by the support of Panhandle PBS, and the Friends of the Amarillo Public Library. Attendance is free and open to the public.
