WINTER Weather Tips & Resources

Streets Department

UPDATE: 01/17/2025: The City of Amarillo Street Division has spent the past week restocking their salt and sand supplies and performing inspections and maintenance on their equipment used in responding to snow and ice events, such as sand spreaders, motor graders, and front-end loaders.  Staff will monitor the forecast throughout today and are prepared to begin sanding operations once snow begins to fall.  As a reminder, the City’s typical response to snow events is sanding of overpasses and signalized arterial intersections and plowing of snow drifts.  The City does not perform clearing of residential streets, except to and around schools or where snow drifts occur. Traveling safely during icy conditions requires preparation and caution. Stay informed and report hazards as needed.

  • Limit travel during icy conditions and drive slowly if you must go out.
  • Leave extra space between vehicles and use caution at intersections.
  • Snow and Ice Response varies as each weather event is unique. Updates will be provided on the City of Amarillo website and at the City of Amarillo Facebook page.
Animal Management and Welfare

Keeping your pets safe during winter weather is critical for their well-being. If it’s too cold for you, it’s too cold for your pets.

  • Bring pets indoors during extreme cold to protect them from freezing temperatures.
  • Ensure they have access to fresh, unfrozen water and regular meals.
  • If pets must stay outside, provide a dry, draft-free, insulated shelter with bedding.
  • Avoid leaving pets in vehicles during cold weather as they can freeze.
  • Towel dry pets after outdoor exposure, focusing on their paws and stomach.

AMW Officers will respond to calls during inclement weather events at 806-378-9032 or go online at amw.amarillo.gov to report any possible concerns regarding animals.

Water Utilities

Preventing frozen pipes is essential to protect both private property and city infrastructure. Letting your taps drip can save you costly repairs and help maintain water flow.

  • Leave faucets dripping during freezing temperatures to prevent pipe bursts.
  • Open cabinet doors to allow warm air to circulate around plumbing.
  • Insulate exposed pipes and outdoor spigots to reduce freezing risks.

To report a water main break, please call 806-378-6824.

Solid Waste

Extreme weather may impact trash collection schedules. Plan ahead and follow guidelines to ensure service efficiency.

  • Place polycarts at least three feet from the curb to prevent hazards for collection trucks.
  • Avoid placing bins on icy slopes to keep them stable.
  • Allow extra time for collection services as delays may occur.
