Street and Alley Maintenance Details

The Street Division’s three types of pavement repairs for asphalt streets and alleys are categorized according to the size and complexity of the repair.

Pothole Patching

  • Generally ranges from 9 to 25 square feet in size
  • Patching process ordinarily takes 20-30 minutes to complete

Minor Repair

  • Generally, ranges from 25 to 200 square feet in size
  • Repair process ordinarily takes 3-8 hours to complete. 

Major Repair

  • Well over 200 square feet in size
  • Repair process ordinarily takes 2-10 working days to complete

Scheduled maintenance helps protect our roads and alleys from costly repairs, saving time and taxpayer money while extending the lifespan of our infrastructure.

Crack Sealing

  • Intermediate maintenance between sealcoat or overlay cycles
  • Seals cracks with asphalt to prevent water from damaging the road base
  • Typically performed from November to March

Sealcoating (Chipseal)

  • Sprays asphalt and gravel to improve surface grip and prevent deterioration
  • Performed on residential streets every 10 years, typically from June to September

Paved Alley Sealing (Fog Seal)

  • Protects alley surfaces from water damage
  • Typically performed in April, May, September, and October
  • Alleys will be closed for 4 hours after the sealant is applied

The Street Division is responsible for administering the permit process for all utility excavations within City Right-of-Way (ROW) for service line installation or maintenance.  City ROW includes both public streets and alleys. 

City Code Chapter 4-6, Article V, Sec. 4-6-201: Service Lineis a line connecting the Service Provider’s utility or meter to the customer’s point of utilization or consumption.

According to Sec. 4-6-205 – Service Line Permit

All utility work that involves excavation within city streets or alleys requires a permit.
To apply:

  1. Submit a Service Line Permit application to the Street Division.
  2. Provide excavation and restoration plans.
  3. Post a bond or cash security for the estimated cost of restoration and provide insurance.

The Street Division maintains driving surfaces in unpaved alleys by using sand, gravel, or recycled materials. Repairs are prioritized based on the severity of holes, ruts, and mud to ensure smooth, drivable conditions.
Repairs include:

  • Digging out mud holes or soft spots
  • Filling with new material such as sand, gravel, or fly ash
  • Smoothing and compacting with a rubber-tire roller

The City of Amarillo keeps a close eye on weather conditions to make sure when severe weather is indicated our teams are ready to respond. City response can be initiated for high winds, tornadoes, wildfires, snow and ice (winter weather), and flooding.
