While not required, the Fire Marshal office highly recommends setting up a Preliminary Application Conference (PAC) meeting, through Developmental Services. This is a free meeting that will have all City of Amarillo departments that are involved in the development of new and existing commercial properties.

Step One — Site Plans
  • Submission: Submit all site plans to the Planning Department.
  • Review Time: All involved departments have a minimum of 14 business days to review and comment on the plans.
  • Revisions: Please allow additional time for revisions and resubmittal based on feedback.
  • Fees: There are no fees from the Fire Marshal’s Office for site plan reviews.
Step Two — Building Plans
  • Submission: Submit all building plans to the Building Safety Department.
  • Review Time: All involved departments have a minimum of 10 business days to review and comment on the plans.
  • Revisions: Please allow additional time for revisions and resubmittal based on feedback.
  • Fees: There are no fees from the Fire Marshal’s Office for building plan reviews.
Step Three — Fire System Plans
  • Who Should Submit: A licensed installer is required to submit plans to the Fire Marshal’s Office for the following systems:

    • Automatic fire extinguishing systems
    • Fire alarm and detection systems
    • Fire pumps and related equipment
    • Private hydrants/fire mains
    • Vent hood systems
    • Standpipe systems
    • Clean agent systems
    • Emergency Responder Communication Enhancement Systems (ERCES)
    • Any other fire-related systems

    Submission Requirements:

    • Construction Application: Completed and signed.
    • Plans: At least two sets of legible plans on minimum 18″ x 24″ paper.
    • Fees and Paperwork: Include all related fees and corresponding paperwork.

    How to Submit:

    • Mail or Drop-off:
      • Address: Fire Marshal’s Office, 821 S Johnson St, Amarillo, TX
      • Office Hours: Monday-Friday, 8:00 am – 12:00 pm and 1:00 pm – 5:00 pm
    • Payment Methods: Cash, check, or money order only.
    • Review Time: Allow 10 business days for plan review and comments.

    Permit Issuance:

    • Pickup: The permit must be picked up and signed for by the licensed installer.
    • Validity: The permit is valid for six months from the issue date.
    • Note: Any work done without proper permitting or licensing will be reported to the state and cited.
Step Four — Visual or Phase Inspection
  • Applicability: This step may not be required for all projects.
  • Process:
    • Licensed contractor submits a completed application and fee to the Fire Marshal’s Office.
    • Schedule the inspection upon submission.
  • Frequency: Can be done multiple times throughout the project as needed.
Step Five — System Inspections
  • Requirement: A final inspection of all fire system work is mandatory before scheduling a Certificate of Occupancy inspection.
  • Fees: The cost of the final system inspection is included in the original application fee.
Step Six — Final Certificate of Occupancy (CO) Inspection
  • When: Once the building is ready for a complete inspection for its CO.
  • Process:
    • Submit a CO inspection application and fee to the Fire Marshal’s Office.
    • Fee: Based on the square footage of the property.
  • After Inspection:
    • All necessary paperwork will be forwarded to Building Safety.
    • Building Safety will issue the Certificate of Occupancy.
