West Nile Virus (WNV) is a virus spread most commonly to people by mosquito bites. 80% of people infected with West Nile Virus will not show symptoms. Some who are infected will develop a serious, sometimes fatal illness. There is no vaccination for WNV.

What are the signs and symptoms of West Nile?

  • 1 in 5 people will experience:  Mission Mosquito   
    • Fever
    • Headache
    • Body Aches
    • Joint Pain
    • Vomiting
    • Diarrhea
    • Rash
  • Some people will experience more serious symptoms.

Most people infected with West Nile will not have symptoms.

How do I protect myself from West Nile?

  • Protect yourself from mosquitoes at dawn and dusk    
    • Use insect repellent        
      • EPA-registered repellent
      • Always follow the instructions
      • Reapply as directed
      • Do not spray repellent on the skin under clothing
      • Do not use on babies younger than 2 months old
        • Check label for instructions
    • Wear clothing covering arms and legs
    • Take steps to control mosquitoes inside and outside your house
      • Drain standing water and scrub items which hold water
        • Items like flower pots, old tires, animal water bowls etc.
