Current Projects

2023-2024 Street Maintenance Project

The 2023-2024 Street Maintenance Project is focused on resurfacing and maintaining residential roadways in several key neighborhoods, as well as improving arterial roadways across the city. This project is designed to enhance road quality and extend the life of Amarillo’s infrastructure.

Areas of Focus:

  • Residential Areas: Skyline Terrace, Mesa Verde, Park Terrace, Green Tree Village, and East Amarillo subdivisions.
  • Arterial Roads: Multiple high-traffic streets across the city.

Street Maintenance Approach:

  • Residential Roads: Residential streets undergo a quicker resurfacing process using a single-layer asphalt overlay or chip seal, designed to minimize disruption for residents while ensuring smoother, more reliable road surfaces.
  • Arterial Roads: Arterial roads, which see heavier traffic, are treated using a multi-step process for durability. The first step involves a seal coat with a protective layer of rock. After approximately 2-3 weeks, the road will be finished with micro surfacing, resulting in a smoother, long-lasting surface. The complexity of this process means arterial roads may take longer to complete but will provide greater longevity.

Key Differences:

  • Traffic Volume: Arterial roads accommodate more vehicles and heavier loads than residential streets, necessitating a more robust paving solution.
  • Timeline: Residential road projects are typically quicker, while arterial road maintenance takes longer due to the need for a multi-layer approach and curing times between steps.

Scheduled Completion Date: Spring 2025
Miles of Arterial Roadways: Approximately 11+
Miles of Residential Roadways: Approximately 31+
Contract Amount: $7,603,297.30

Eastridge Neighborhood Street Maintenance Postponed

We would like to inform residents of the Eastridge neighborhood that the planned street maintenance project involving micro-surfacing will be postponed. The work, originally scheduled for this summer, has been rescheduled to the spring/summer of 2025 due to adjustments in our project timeline.

Why the Delay?

Our capital projects team is committed to maintaining the quality and safety of residential streets. However, changes in contractor scheduling and project logistics require us to shift this project to next year's maintenance schedule.

What’s Next?

  • New Schedule: Micro-surfacing will take place in the spring/summer of 2025.
  • Updates: We will provide regular updates through this webpage and direct communication closer to the start date.
