Resources & Guidance faqs

For those who are currently experiencing homelessness, Coming Home provides outreach services to those in Amarillo. Outreach services can connect individuals with local resources including day shelter, night-time shelters, food, and medical assistance. If you’re experiencing homelessness and in need resources or would like to speak with an Outreach Case Manager, please contact Coming Home by calling 806-378-3098.

During severe winter conditions, Amarillo Emergency Shelters provide warmth and safety. Amarillo City Transit offers free transportation to shelters when temperatures drop below 38°F. Inform the driver if you’re heading to a warming center (GSRC, Faith City, Salvation Army, Code Blue).

The City of Amarillo does not have funding available to assist with water or other utility bills. Occasionally, Panhandle Community Services (806) 373-8389 or 2-1-1 will have funding to offer this assistance. 

Transformation Park is a nonprofit transitional housing facility that aims to address the rising homeless population in Amarillo. The project, funded by local churches, businesses, and City of Amarillo will provide shelters, resources and support to our local unsheltered population. CARE Program

The CARE Program provides one-time assistance to homeowners in making critical repairs to conditions in their homes that cause imminent danger to human life, health, or safety. Eligibility is determined by homeowner income and home type.

Rental Assistance FAQs

To contact the rental assistance program, email housing@amarillo.gov.

Visit GoSection8.com for a listing of affordable rental properties in Amarillo. This site includes properties that are listed by the owner or property management group.

We have a list of active landlords who participate with the Housing Choice Voucher program. You may pick up that list at the Simms Municipal Building located at 808 S Buchanan in the Community Development Department.

TBRA stands for Tenant-Based Rental Assistance. It is a program that provides rental assistance to eligible low-income individuals and families in Amarillo. The City of Amarillo administers the TBRA program to help households afford safe and decent housing by subsidizing a portion of their monthly rent.

This program isn’t currently accepting applications. 

Rapid Re-housing is a program that helps individuals and families experiencing homelessness find stable housing quickly. Community Development works with community agencies to identify qualified households. Rapid Re-housing provides short-term rental assistance, case management, and supportive services to help them regain independence.

This program is not currently accepting applications. 

HCV is a federal program that supports low-income families, the elderly, and the disabled in finding safe affordable housing. It allows participants to choose their housing, with the Amarillo Housing Authority providing a housing subsidy directly to the landlord.

The “Wait List” is a system managed by the Amarillo Housing Authority through a lottery. It assigns Housing Choice Vouchers based on availability. Due to high demand, waiting periods are common, and the list may be closed temporarily.

Keep an eye on news outlets, social media, and the Community Development website. The City of Amarillo will announce the reopening of the Housing Choice Voucher waitlist.
