General Election Information

Amarillo General Elections for City Council are held in May of each odd-numbered year.  The May uniform election date authorized by state law is the first Saturday of the month. Therefore, the 2025 Election will be held on Saturday, May 3, 2025.

The 2025 Candidate Packet will be released in early January 2025.

Important Dates for Candidates: 
  • First Day for Filing Candidate Application: Wednesday, January 15, 2025
  • Filing Deadline for Candidates: Friday, February 14, 2025
 

Filing Period for a Place on the Ballot

The Texas Election Code sets the filing deadline for a place on the ballot of an election on a uniform election date at the 78th day before Election Day (Section 143.007(c)) and provides that the first day to file an application is 30th day before the filing deadline (Section 143.007(a)).

  • The first day for filing an application is the 30th day preceding, which is Wednesday, January 15, 2025.
  • The filing deadline is the 78th day before the May 3rd election date which is Friday, February 14, 2025 by 5:00 p.m.

Regular business hours for the City Secretary’s Office are Monday – Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The filing location is the City Secretary’s Office, 601 S. Buchanan, Room 303, Amarillo, TX 79101. 

City Council Candidate Qualifications 
  • Must be a United States Citizen;
  • Must be 18 years of age or older on the first day of the term to be filled at the election;
  • Must be a qualified voter;
  • Must have been a registered voter as of February 14, 2025 in the jurisdiction in which you are seeking election;
  • Must have resided continuously:
    •  In the state for at least one year prior to the filing deadline, and
    • in the City of Amarillo for a period of twelve months immediately preceding the election;
  • Must not have been determined totally mentally incapacitated or partially mentally incapacitated without the right to vote by a final judgement of a court;
  • Must not have been finally convicted of a felony from which you have not been pardoned or otherwise released from the resulting disabilities; and
  • Must not:
    • be indebted to the City;
    • hold any other office of public emolument;
    • be interested in the profits or emolument of any contracts, job, work or service for the City, or
    • be interested in the sale to the City of any supplies, equipment, material or articles purchased.
Filing Requirements for Candidates

The application for place on the ballot must be received by the February 14, 2025 filing deadline and be accompanied by a $100.00 filing fee. In lieu of the filing fee, a candidate may submit a petition pursuant to City of Amarillo Charter, Article IV, Section 5. The minimum number of signatures required for a place on the ballot is 100 registered voters of the City of Amarillo.
