City Personnel Respond to Historic Wind Event

Post Date:03/14/2019 4:31 PM

The Amarillo Area Office of Emergency Management, Amarillo Police Department, Amarillo Fire Department and other first responders and city personnel responded to the historic winds that blew through Amarillo Wednesday.

The massive winds (reportedly with gusts as high as 80 miles-per-hour) led to a power outage at Amarillo City Hall, 601 S. Buchanan Street. Power was restored around 9:30 a.m. Thursday, and City Hall was re-opened.

Here is the latest regarding the wind event:

  • City crews are repairing/replacing traffic signs damaged due to the wind. Stop and yield signs are the top priority. Approximately 20 traffic signals were damaged or without power. Full restoration of these traffic signals is being done on a priority basis. The Parks and Recreation Department responded to 58 calls of downed trees in streets.
  • There are currently no city streets blocked by debris.
  • Rick Husband Amarillo International Airport has resumed normal operations. The Amarillo Zoo is open. Amarillo City Transit is operating as normal.
  • Brush sites are open at Hastings and Eastern. Special hours are available from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday and Friday and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday.
  • There are no concerns with the water supply.
  • Curbside cart service will resume Friday, as personnel are assisting with emergency response. Citizens may leave debris near the curb for pickup. Please call Solid Waste at (806) 378-6810 for notification. Unfortunately, the City cannot remove large debris from prívate property.
