Scam Targets Utility Customers

Post Date:02/25/2019 5:00 PM

City of Amarillo is warning residents of a scam for the payment of services such as water, solid waste, sewer and drainage.

The Utility Billing Department has received information of two businesses being contacted in-person by individuals falsely claiming to be city employees and/or representatives. The individuals demanded money for payment of city services, or services to the businesses would be disrupted. The scam includes phone calls from individuals falsely claiming to be city representatives and requesting immediate payment to avoid service disruption.

On Feb. 18, the Utility Billing Department upgraded to new software that will enable residents to have automatic draft capabilities for their accounts, among other improvements.

During the first month of this transition period, the Utility Billing Department IS NOT assessing late fees or penalties, and IS NOT discontinuing services due to non-payment.

Information regarding the new software is available at billing.amarillo.gov. More information is also available by calling the City of Amarillo Utility Billing Department at (806) 378-3030. Customers contacted through the scam are advised to notify the Amarillo Police Department. The non-emergency number is (806) 378-3038.
