STD Information for PRoviders
Providers are required to report certain STDs to the Public Health Department. The following conditions are reportable:
- Chlamydia
- Gonorrhea
- Syphilis
- HIV/AIDS
- Chancroid
How Providers Can Report
Positive STD test results can be reported confidentially through one of the following methods:
- DSHS STD-27 form
- By phone: Call 806-378-6344
- By fax: Send lab reports to 806-378-6308
- By email: Send reports to stdreporting@amarillo.gov
Reports for Potter and Randall County residents should be sent to the Amarillo Department of Public Health.
Required Information for Reporting
When reporting an STD, the following information is required:
- Patient’s full name
- Address, city, county of residence
- Date of birth
- Sex
- Race/ethnicity
- Stage of diagnosis (for syphilis)
- Type of test(s) performed, results, and date performed
- Treatment provided
- Physician/clinic address and telephone number

How can I schedule a STD appointment?
Call 806-378-6300 at 7:30 am to schedule a same-day appointment at the Public Health clinic.
What do I need to bring with me when I get STD tested?
Please bring a valid photo I.D. to your appointment at the Public Health clinic.
How long will my appointment last?
It depends on the service provided, anywhere from 5-45 minutes. Public Health staff will give you an estimate when you schedule your appointment.
What if I need to reschedule or cancel my appointment?
Please call the Public Health clinic at least 24 hours in advance to reschedule or cancel.
What if I can’t pay for STD testing?
Some fees can be waived. Speak with the receptionist at the Public Health clinic when making your appointment. No one will be turned away due to an inability to pay.
How old do I have to be to get tested for an STD?
If you are 13 or older and sexually active, the Public Health clinic can test you for gonorrhea, chlamydia, syphilis, and HIV. Parental permission is not required if you are ages 13-18.
How long does it take to get my STD test results?
Typically, STD test results take 7-10 days. The Public Health Department will notify you of your test results and provide any necessary follow-up care or treatment based on the outcome.
How do I get my medicine after receiving STD results?
Your medicine will be provided at the Public Health clinic after your diagnosis.
How often can I get tested for STDs?
You can get tested for STDs every 30 days through Public Health services.
How long should I wait after having sex to get tested for STDs?
Wait a minimum of seven days. The Public Health Department recommends regular STD testing for sexually active individuals as part of routine health care.
What should I do if my partner tests positive for an STD?
Make an appointment to be tested and treated. The Public Health Department provides partner testing and treatment to help prevent the spread of STDs.
What should I do if someone contacts me saying I was exposed to an STD?
Call the Public Health clinic at 806-378-6300 to make an appointment to be tested and treated. It’s important to follow up quickly to prevent further transmission.
Can I bring someone to my STD appointment with me?
No one is allowed in the exam room with you during your Public Health appointment. If someone accompanies you, they may wait in the clinic lobby.
Can I bring my kids with me for my STD appointment?
Children are not allowed with you during your appointment, and they cannot be left unattended in the Public Health clinic lobby.
What are common STD symptoms?
The Public Health Department encourages you to look out for the following symptoms:
- Abnormal genital or rectal odor, discharge, or bleeding
- Burning sensation while urinating
- Genital or rectal itching
- Painful or swollen testicles
- Genital or rectal sores
Even without symptoms, you could still have an STD, so regular testing is important.
Does Public Health offer HPV testing?
No, Public Health does not offer HPV testing.
Can I be tested for herpes?
If you have an open sore(s), Public Health staff may be able to test it for herpes. However, blood tests for herpes are not offered.
How do I know if I need emergency STD care?
Seek emergency care if you experience:
- Severe genital or rectal bleeding
- Severe abdominal or testicular pain
- A fever
- A foreign object stuck in your vagina or rectum
The Public Health clinic can guide you to emergency care if needed.
