Parks & Recreation Overview

Amarillo Parks & Recreation manages and maintains approximately 2,400 acres of park land at 52 parks. These parks provide a variety of recreation experiences, including close-to-home play space, destination parks, and major facilities that attract people from throughout the city and region.

Amarillo Parks & Recreation also maintains 28 outdoor school properties to support close-to-home recreation. These “school parks” include 11 sites that are owned or jointly owned by the City, along with 17 sites entirely owned by one of three school districts.

Amarillo’s parks include several recreation facilities and complexes that provide specialized recreation opportunities. These facilities house most of the City’s indoor and outdoor recreation programs and enrichment services.

Amarillo Zoo

Open year-round, the Amarillo Zoo cares for over 120 animals representing 70 species from around. From native species like bison, to creatures from the other side of the planet like tigers, you can travel the world in a day when you visit the Zoo. 

The Amarillo Zoo offers events, educational programs, and party rental opportunities.

Amarillo Parks and Recreation Aquatics runs three seasonal outdoor pools, one indoor pool, and provides a wide variety of different events, programs, parties, and swimming lessons year-round. 

We also offer 12 splash pads throughout the city of Amarillo which operate from late spring to early fall.

Athletics

Parks & Recreation Athletics offers a variety of adult athletic programs and field rental opportunities. We offer seasonal adult indoor and outdoor volleyball leagues, softball leagues, and basketball league. Additionally, Parks & Recreation offers field rentals for a variety of youth and adult sport leagues.

Beautification & Public Arts

The City of Amarillo’s Beautification and Public Arts Division enhances public spaces through initiatives like the Mural Grant Program, park cleanups, and Adopt-a-Park. Established in 2018, the Beautification and Public Arts Advisory Board guides these efforts by promoting public art, arts employment, and integrating art into community spaces.

Park Reservations

Amarillo Parks & Recreation offers a variety of reservable spaces to suit any event, from park shelters and gazebos to large stages with electricity. Options include small and large outdoor shelters, sports fields, and even the Warford Activity Center for indoor gatherings. Special event spaces are available for larger groups, and additional amenities can be arranged.

Senior Services

Amarillo Parks & Recreation is dedicated to enhancing the health, wellness, and community connections of Active Adults 50+ in Amarillo. Through our NeighborHub, a digital community, and Senior Services at the Warford Activity Center, we provide access to local activities, resources, and programs. Membership includes amenities like an indoor pool and cardio facilities.

Amarillo Parks and Recreation hosts a wide range of free special events throughout the year. 

Seasonal offerings include 4th of July Celebration, Starlight Cinema, Starlight Theater, Monster Park, Dia De Los Muertos and many other opportunities for residents of all ages.

Our Tennis Center features 14 lighted outdoor courts, 3 indoor courts, and 9 outdoor pickleball courts. Enjoy amenities like a snack bar, picnic area, and pro shop, with accessible facilities for all. Programs include junior camps, tennis lessons, and more, providing an inclusive and welcoming experience for players of all ages.

The Charles E. Warford Activity Center offers a variety of amenities, including an updated indoor pool, fitness studio, weight and cardio room, esports room, gymnasium, locker rooms, senior services area and multi-purpose rooms. Park Maintenance

Amarillo Parks & Recreation is dedicated to preserving 2,400 acres of parks, open spaces, and recreational facilities across the city. Our maintenance team works seven days a week to ensure these areas remain safe, clean, and accessible for everyone. By managing 65 parks, 4 pools, 15 splash pads, 4 golf courses, and 5 fishing lakes, we aim to provide high-quality outdoor experiences.

The City of Amarillo has experienced tremendous changes in the last ten years. With a community-driven mandate to renew park infrastructure and ensure all residents have access to the vital benefits of parks, the 2021 Parks and Recreation Master Plan introduces an investment strategy to protect Amarillo’s heritage and infuse vitality into the City’s park and recreation system.

We manage 2,400 acres across 52 parks, including playgrounds, pools, sports complexes, golf courses, and community centers. Our services include recreation, adult athletics, fitness programs, senior services, public art, beautification, and special events.

Our senior services offer activities, fitness programs, and access to the NeighborHub community. Memberships provide access to the Warford Center’s amenities.

Amarillo offers a range of golf experiences with green fees from $27 (weekdays) to $30 (weekends/holidays), plus twilight discounts. Memberships vary for individuals, families, and seniors, with added benefits like range balls and cart discounts.
