Think of it as a test drive, only you are not purchasing a vehicle but rather spending quality time with man’s best friend and possibly a future furry family member.

The City of Amarillo Animal Management and Welfare (AAMW) Department is offering residents and potential pet owners a unique opportunity – “Doggy Day Out.”

“Doggy Day Out is a really special way for people to get to know a shelter dog, and for the dog to get to know them,” said AAMW Rescue Manager Kali Dennis. “Whether you are considering pet adoption or just want to spend a fun day providing socialization and exercise for a shelter dog, Doggy Day Out is for you.”

“Doggie Day Out” is a volunteer program that puts residents and potential pet owners together with shelter dogs for a day – free to get to know each other by going to a park, visiting the resident’s home, etc. Residents not considering pet adoption are still welcome to participate in the program.

There are requirements to participate in the “Doggy Day Out” program. Participants must be at least 18 years old, submit an application and waiver and attend a brief training session on the first Saturday of each month or by appointment.
