When are elections held to elect the Mayor and Members of City Council?
The City of Amarillo conducts its General Election in May every odd year. The next General Election is scheduled for Saturday, May 6, 2017.

Which Offices are up for election?
The elective officers of the City consist of a Mayor and four (4) Councilmembers (the Councilmembers are designated as Councilmember Place One, Councilmember Place Two, Councilmember Place Three and Councilmember Place Four). Each is elected at-large by a majority of the registered voters within the city. All of these officers are up for election every odd year in May.

What are the qualifications to run for Municipal Office?
Per Article V, Section 4 of the City Charter, the qualifications are as follows:

(a) The Mayor and each Councilmember shall be resident citizens of the City of Amarillo, have the qualifications of registered voters therein and shall have been a resident citizen of the City of Amarillo for a period of twelve (12) months immediately preceding such election.
(b) The Mayor, Councilmembers and other officers and employees shall not be indebted to the City; shall not hold any other public office of emolument and shall not be interested in the profits or emolument of any contracts, job, work or service for the municipality, or interested in the sale to the City of any supplies, equipment, material or articles purchased.
(c) Any officer or employee of the City who shall cease to possess any of the qualifications herein required shall forthwith forfeit office and any such contract in which any officer or employee is or may become interested may be declared void by the Council.

What are the terms of office?
Per Article V, Section 2 of the City Charter, the term of office for all Members of the City Council elected at a General Election is two (2) years and until a successor is elected and qualified; unless sooner removed from office.

Are there term limits?
No.

Does the City Council receive a salary?
Yes, per Article V, Section 13 of the City Charter, the Mayor and each Councilmember receives compensation in the amount of $10.00 per diem, for attendance upon each regular meeting of the Council.

How do I apply for Municipal Office?
In order to have your name appear on the ballot, an individual is required to submit an Application for a Place on the Ballot.
Note that a candidate may announce his/her intention to run for Municipal Office at any time. However, he/she can not file an Application until the designated filing period for each election.
Applications must be submitted to the Office of the City Secretary.

Is there a fee associated with applying for Municipal Office?
At the time of filing an application for a place on the Ballot, the person shall, in addition to meeting all other requirements and qualifications, either pay an application fee of one hundred dollars ($100.00) payable to the City of Amarillo delivered to the City Secretary, or in lieu of such payment submit a petition signed by one hundred (100) registered voters of the City, verified by the City Secretary, in support of the person’s candidacy.

Is there anything else that I need to submit?
Campaign Finance Reports are required to be filed with the City Secretary on July 15th and January 15th of each year.

Additionally, Chapter 145 of the Local Government Code requires that all Officeholders and Candidates for Municipal Office submit a Personal Financial Statement (PFS).

Pursuant to Chapter 258 of the Texas Election Code, every Candidate and Political Committee is encouraged to subscribe to the Code of Fair Campaign Practices. The Code may be filed with the Office of the City Secretary upon submission of the Campaign Treasurer Appointment.

What if I decide to withdraw after I have submitted my Application for a Place on the Ballot?
In accordance with Section 145.001 of the Texas Election Code, a Candidate is required to submit a sworn statement in writing acknowledging his/her intent to withdraw his/her Application for a Place on the Ballot.

The Withdrawal Request is considered effective immediately upon being received in the Office of the City Secretary.
