     Community Development
 Service and Information
 Community Development Block Grant
 Information regarding grants which may be available to non-profit agencies for projects that benefit low and moderate income neighborhoods is available from the Community Development office. Call 378-3023 for more information. Funding for projects is considered in May and June of each year.
 Emergency Shelter Grants
 Information regarding grants which may be available to non-profit agencies for projects which improve the lives and safety of the homeless is available from the Community Development office. Call 378-3023 for more information. Funding is available in October of each year.
 Fair Housing Complaints
 Complaints by tenants or home buyers alleging violations of the local fair housing ordinance may be filed with the Municipal Court Prosecutor's office in Municipal Court. For more information call 378-3082. Complaints may also be filed directly with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, Fort Worth, Texas, 76013, or by calling Toll Free 1-800-424-8590.  Fair Housing Information
 Information regarding your rights as a home buyer or renter under the Fair Housing Act is available from the Community Development office by calling 378-4203.
 Home Buyers Assistance Program
 This program helps low to moderate income families who qualify for a mortgage loan from a participating lender. The City funding can pay up to 75% of the down payment and closing costs incurred for the purchase of a single family home. The maximum grant amount is $5,000. Interested home buyers must apply to local mortgage lenders and must complete home buyer education seminars. Homes to be purchased must be inside the City limits of Amarillo and meet HUDs Housing Quality Standards. For lower income households, a new $15,000 grant is available to lower the amount of a mortgage. For more information call 378-9319.

 Homeless Assistance
 Information regarding shelters, travelers assistance, and emergency food and clothing is available from the United Way Help Line at 373-2662 or by dialing 2-1-1. The Information and Referral office is located at 200 S. Tyler.
 Housing, Emergency Repair Grants
 Grants to repair hazardous or life threatening housing conditions are available to very low income homeowners living inside the City limits. The maximum grant available is $3,500. Emergency repairs include replacement of water, sewer or gas lines, interior plumbing problems, water heaters, open flame gas heaters, roofs, etc. Renovations to make homes more accessible to persons with disabilities are eligible. Homeowners must apply in the Community Development office, Room 104, City Hall. Homeowners must bring a copy of the deed to their property and proof of income. Generally repairs can be made within ten days. Call 378-6285 for more information.
 Housing, Rehabilitation Grants
 One time grants to rehabilitate homes are available to very low income homeowners living inside the City limits. The amount of the grant is limited by the value of the home after rehabilitation. Homeowners must apply in the Community Development office, Room 104, City Hall. Homeowners must bring a copy of their warranty deed, proof of income and cannot owe back taxes. Applicants will be placed on a waiting list. Call 378-6285 for more information.
 Information and Referral
 A community resource directory and referral assistance for emergency assistance, rent, food, utilities, etc., is available from the United Way Help Line at 373-2662 or by dialing 211.
 Rental Assistance (HUD) Programs
 Assistance is available to help pay portions of rent for qualified lower income families, elderly, and disabled persons. Income and family circumstances are verified. Monthly rent payments are made directly to the landlord. Rental assistance is available for as long as a tenant is eligible. There is a one-year waiting list for persons applying for rental assistance. Applications are taken on the 1st Tuesday of each month from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. in Room 104, City Hall.  Rental Rehabilitation Program
 This program helps investors in rehabilitating sub-standard rental units. The owner must make all of the units available to low income families for a 5 to 10 year affordability period. Property owners may receive a no interest, deferred payment loan for up to 50% of the eligible project costs. The property owner must obtain the balance of funding for the project from personal funds or private lenders.
 Street Paving
 Information about paving of residential streets under the Community Development Block Grant Program is available by calling 378-3005.
 Tyler Street Resource Center
 Located at 200 S. Tyler, the Resource Center houses nine local agencies creating easy access to community resources for those in need. Services for the homeless include: a maildrop; shower and laundry facilities; a day shelter; primary medical and dental care; mental health screening; and a telephone bank. Services for low income families include: food, clothing and furniture assistance; youth and family counseling; adult eye care; maternity, adoption, and foster care services; employment assistance; information and referral. The Center is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The day room for the homeless is open Saturday and Sunday from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. For more information call 373-2662.
 Weatherization Program
 Free weatherization of homes owned by lower income families is available from the Panhandle Community Services Agency. Preference is given to elderly and disabled households. Call 372-2531 for more information.

 Community Health Assessment
 The Department has performed a community wide assessment of important public health problems and concerns. This assessment measures the size and seriousness of these health problems and identifies effective intervention methods to be taken to address the problem needs.  HIV Prevention and Education

 J O Wyatt Community Health Center
 The health center operated by the Northwest Texas Healthcare System is located at 1411 Amarillo Boulevard East. Health services and programs provided to the community include outpatient medical visits, immunizations, prenatal services, pharmacy services, etc. For more information on services and programs provided call 351-7200.
 Public Health Education
 The Department offers numerous educational programs and services to promote effective and important Public Health issues and needs. For more information or to request assistance call 378-6300.
 Refugee Screening and Services
 Clinical health assessments, education and counseling are available to immigrants new to the community. For more information on these services and programs available call 378-6339.
 Sexually Transmitted Disease Clinics

     Amarillo City Transit
 Service and Information
 Bus Operating Hours
 Amarillo City Transit operates Monday through Saturday from 6:15 a.m. until 6:45 p.m. (Some routes depart on the last trip at 5:00 p.m.)
 Bus Routes
 Bus routes run from the downtown transfer point to most major shopping centers and the Medical Center. Buses run every half hour from 6:15 a.m. to 6:45 p.m.

 Accessibility for Persons with Disabilities
 The Advisory Commission for People with Disabilities considers matters related to improving accessibility for persons with disabilities and issues covered by the Americans with Disabilities Act. The Advisory Commission for People with Disabilities meets the first Thursday of each month at noon on an as needed basis in the Commission Chambers at City Hall.  Holidays
 The Transit System does not operate buses or the Special Transportation Service on Sundays or the following holidays: New Years Day, Martin Luther King Day, Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, Day After Thanksgiving and Christmas Day.
 Spec-Trans
 This is a specialized transportation service operating within the City limits available to certified mobility impaired persons who are unable to utilize an accessible fixed route bus. There is no restriction for trip purposes. Hours of operation are 6:15 a.m. until 6:45 p.m. The service operates Monday through Saturday. The telephone number for reservations is 378-3095. TDD users may call 372-6234 to schedule service.
     Women, Infants, and Children Program (WIC)
 Service and Information
 Breastfeeding Education
 Breastfeeding information, education, and support is available to pregnant women and breastfeeding women enrolled in the WIC Program, as well as those in the general public requesting such.
 Client Services/Program Enrollment
 Enrollment in the WIC Program is based on categorical financial, residency, and medical/nutrition factors. Client service representatives are located at the WIC Administration Building to answer any questions about program availability and to process client enrollment applications.
 Farmers Market
 The WIC Program works closely with the Texas Department of Agriculture to provide clients with educational training and vouchers for fruits and vegetables sold at the Amarillo certified Farmers Market open each summer during the growing season.
 Food Vouchers
 The WIC Program issues food vouchers to qualified clients which allow for the purchase of nutritious foods at local Amarillo grocery stores.
 Immunizations
 The WIC Program screens clients and their siblings for compliance with recommended childhood immunization schedules and refers them to private health care providers.
