October is National Community Planning Month!

Professional planners assist in the creation of communities that offer a broad number of options for where and how people live. It is an active profession that works to improve the welfare of people and their communities by creating more convenient, attractive places for current and future generations. Planners collaborate with many groups of people including Planning and Zoning Commissioners, Mayor, and City Council as well as city and county staff, and local utility companies to cultivate communities of lasting value.
Planners also assist developers, business owners, and citizens in finding solutions to community problems. Many times, planners provide the big picture and try to relate the project to various types of ordinances or guidelines in order to produce a final product that meets the community’s needs.
Amarillo Planners have several common tools that they use in their day-to-day operation including Subdivision Regulations, Zoning Ordinance, and Sign ordinance. In addition to these tools, planners also use Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to pinpoint a location when provided an address or tax identification number. A specific location ensures information provided for a property is accurate. Many times, Planners are the first to be contacted when a property is developed.
