Food Handler

The City of Amarillo Environmental Health Department strongly believes that providing proper education for Food Handlers is essential to reducing the risk of a food borne illness outbreaks caused by improper food preparation and handling techniques. At Environmental Health we offer a nationally accredited Food Handler program on the first and last Friday of every month at a cost of $20.00. The class is located in the Simms Building at 808 S. Buchanan St. in Amarillo, TX. Upon completion of the class and a passing grade on the exam, a certified Food Handler certificate will be issued by ServSafe and the certificate is valid for 2 years.

§ 228.33 (e) of the Texas Food Establishment rules require “The food establishment shall maintain on premises a certificate of completion of the food handler training course for each food employee”.

Food Manager

The City of Amarillo Environmental Health Department strongly believes that providing proper education for Food Managers is essential to reducing the risk of a food borne illness outbreaks caused by improper food preparation and handling techniques. At Environmental Health we offer a nationally accredited Food Manager program on the second Wednesday of every month at a cost of $150.00. The class is located in the Simms Building at 808 S. Buchanan St. in Amarillo, TX. Upon completion of the class and a passing grade on the exam, a certified Food Manager certificate will be issued by ServSafe and the certificate is valid for 5 years. If you have a valid certificate from a State of Texas or Nationally accredited program, you can register it for an annual fee of $40.00. An annual registration of at least one Certified Food Manager per establishment is required for a cost of $40.00.

§ 228.33 of the Texas Food Establishment rules require “At least one employee that has supervisory and management responsibility and the authority to direct and control food preparation and service shall be a certified food protection manager who has shown proficiency of required information through passing a test that is part of an accredited program”.
