OEM to Conduct Active Shooter Training Exercise

Posted on May 17, 2017

Amarillo, TX – The Amarillo/Potter/Randall Office of Emergency Management (OEM) will conduct a full-scale active shooter training exercise Tuesday, May 23 from 7 a.m. to 12 p.m. (Noon) at the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center (TTUHSC) Amarillo Campus, 1300 S. Coulter Rd. The exercise should not disrupt or interfere with appointments an individual may have with businesses located in the area. People in the area can expect to see large numbers of police, fire, and other emergency vehicles and responders and activity around the TTUHSC building.

Approximately 30 agencies and multiple disciplines will participate including dispatch, emergency management, emergency medical services, fire, healthcare, law enforcement, schools, and voluntary organizations active in a disaster. This exercise will allow these agencies to practice their skills and response procedures to an active shooter incident as well as identify opportunities to enhance their current capabilities.

Each year, the OEM conducts these types of training exercises to assist the whole community with developing strategies to become more resilient to hazards which might impact the Amarillo area. The OEM encourages that all individuals, families, and businesses ensure they are prepared for any hazard. Being prepared and conducting exercises is a critical element of any emergency program.
