Rock Island Rail Trail Project Improves Crosswalk at Georgia and Plains

Posted on Jan 10, 2017

Amarillo, TX – Drivers may experience delays in the coming weeks at Georgia Street and Plains Boulevard as the first project implemented from the Rock Island Rail Trail Master Plan is underway. Motorists may experience these delays as a City of Amarillo contractor makes improvements to the concrete at the intersection – requiring minimal lane closures – ensuring proper ADA compliance while increasing accessibility and safety of the crosswalk.

As part of this project, the Georgia Street and Plains Boulevard intersection will now have a LightGuard Systems® composed of in-roadway warning lights. These warning lights are directed to motorists and have been installed by City of Amarillo’s Traffic crews. The crosswalk system may be activated in several different ways including automatically via bi-directional infrared sensors when a pedestrian enters the crosswalk and by the pedestrian manually pressing a button at the crosswalk. Other improvements to the immediate area include the installation of new benches and a bicycle “fixit” station where minor repairs may be made.

The Rock Island Rail Trail Master Plan was approved by the Amarillo City Council in 2015 and increases opportunities for alternative transportation while improving connectivity and safety of the Rock Island Rail Trail. For more information on the LightGuard System® or other improvements, visit amarillo.gov or call the Parks & Recreation department at (806) 378-3036.
