Amarillo, TX – Beginning Jan. 1, Amarillo Animal Management & Welfare (AAM&W) will stop waiving reclaim fees for those pets who have been lost and are now in the City of Amarillo animal shelter’s care. These fees were originally waived during the major construction projects in 2016 that decreased the shelter’s animal housing capabilities. The shelter has now returned to full capacity.
Director of AAM&W Richard Havens says the shelter strives to get animals out of the shelter in a positive manner and waiving fees during the construction period was AAM&W’s compromise to help facilitate expedited release.
“Data over the last year shows that waiving fees had little-to-no impact on reclaim rates and therefore AAM&W will not continue waiving fees since construction has ceased for the time being,” says Havens. “Citizens should be proactive and responsible by taking the appropriate measures to make sure their animals stay contained. If a pet becomes lost, owners should actively search for them by starting at the shelter at 3501 S. Osage.”
The shelter is open to the public from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday.
